Spicy Saltines

This recipe came from a good friend of mine, Diane, who passed away last year. She was a terrific cook and always had the favorite food at every party she attended. She used to bring this recipe to many functions where we just had snacks and everyone always clamored to get to these crackers first! When traveling on road trips she brought these and we would graze our way through the entire trip! Diane was a Delta Gamma and brought these crackers to many DG events. She was famous for these crackers!

Empty 1 box of saltine crackers (4 sleeves) into a Hefty jumbo bag.

Combine in a Pyrex measuring cup–feel free to adjust seasonings to your taste

       1 pkg dry ranch mix
       1Tbsp garlic powder
1 Tbsp red pepper flakes/cut this in half if you do not like spicy!
       1 tsp salt
       1 cup oil

Pour mixture over crackers.  Turn the bag several times to coat them.  Turn again
about every  20 minutes several times.  Stores well in the bag.

These crackers are great by themselves or with chicken, tuna salad, or just about anything.

I will definitely try these! We love spicy.

  4. Those sound good. I bet that spice mix would work on plain Cheerios too! (I have a lot of Cheerios to get through :P )

Do you mean a clean Hefty garbage bag or like a gallon size ziplock bag. Never heard of a Hefty jumbo bag. Apparently I live under a rock!

In the past they have made some that are/were called Jumbo and they were bigger than a gallon size. If you cannot find those then you could do half and half in gallon bags I bet. Enjoy!

You could also do this with Chex Mix.

Oyster Crackers….then you can enjoy 100′s of them and not feel too guilty.

These are fabulous…perfect for a fun project with a young grand daughter! Everybody loved them…but could not breathe on anybody for a while! Going to try it with the tiny oyster cracker size. Will look for the mini saltines….

Glad you liked them! The little mini saltines are very cute and really will do well for this recipe. I love oyster crackers also and bet the kiddos would too!

  9. Love these! My mom’s friend (and my second mother) makes the same recipe. but I think she uses butter instead of oil and the puts them in the oven. I’ll have to double check on that. But they’re one of my favorite treats she makes!
