Vintage Ghost Signs

I am a huge fan of the beauty of old vintage building advertising (some call them ghost signs). You can find the most wonderful ads and artwork on old buildings in small town America. I am adding this to my 2011 travel list of special things to photograph. I hope this spring I can hit the country roads and travel from small town to small town and discover old buildings filled with history and art. Maybe I can do this when in search of wildflowers. That would be a great mulit-tasking project!

This old building came from a small town where I grew up… I love that it is a Coca Cola ad. Even though it is peeling and fading you can see how wonderful it must have been.

  1. Awesome. I can’t wait to see the pictures you are going to get from your travels!

  2. B-what a fun thing to look for! this is so similar to a presentation I saw at Ignite Portland.. the speaker’s hobby was to go out driving and photograph decorated/painted mailboxes. he had photographs of hundreds of different designs and talked about the best places to find ’em. ping me and i’ll see if I can dig up the link for you…

  3. I love the old signs too. They are few and far between here. Road trips would be fun to do. Hoping to do one this summer.

  4. We have a whole block here that has just been “re-vitalized” where they painted OVER all the old stuff–but they still call it by the old name–Catfish Alley. If looks great, and the shops are still pretty much the same, but it has lost it’s “flavor” with the new paint. I think they called it “progress”.

  5. Have you seen the original “Winnebago” down at Lone Pine??? Now THAT is worth the trip! We’re riding out a huge blizzard here as I speak…aren’t you glad you’re in sunny Weather? 😉

  6. I love this idea!! I told my husband that I wanted to go to as many small town county fairs as possible this year. The mailbox site sounds cool!!
Can’t wait to see all your upcoming photos! You’ll find them. 🙂

Now, head on over to my place. I’ve left ya a little surprise. 🙂

  7. This is a great picture of a subject near and dear to my heart. I’ve spent whole vacations searching for ghost signs Each is a treasure. Thanks for your continued inspiration.
