Monday Memories

Growing up on a ranch was the best thing ever! The positives always outweighed the negatives. The only real negative from my view was the lack of playmates. There were no kids close by. The flip side of that was, as a little kid, you learn very quickly to make your own fun. My siblings and I never lacked for fun things to do. We used our swings for hours and hours dreaming of becoming a circus act. In the summer and fall I could easily spend an entire day making mud pies and baking them in the sun. I still remember having a precious little aluminum baking set with all the tiny utensils. I literally would spend from morning to dusk baking and baking with the front porch as my kitchen. My mom would deliver my lunch to me and I would enjoy a little picnic every day. (I am sure my mom delivered my lunch due to the fact I was no doubt covered in mud from head to toe) Some days we would ride a pony or horse. We would get to go see a new calf. Play with our dogs. We would feed the birds our father raised. Other days we would follow our dad around the ranch. I remember many a day walking or running behind the tractor while our dad planted a cotton crop. Branding and working cattle was always a fun time because it involved many cowboys coming and helping with the work. It was all very exciting, but I remember being around 4-5 and being so mad because the kids had to stay and watch from the yard because my dad said it was too dangerous to be out and about. Winters always brought snow and I loved it when my mom bundled us up and let us play in snow outside. It didn’t take us long to want to come back inside, but we made lots of snow angels which we never tired of. Snow ice cream was always a treat when returning inside after a nice hot bath. Summertime was our favorite because we could all walk to the creek and spend hours swimming and playing. When we were old enough to go to creek by ourselves it became a risky “adventure” as we had to walk through a pasture with a really unfriendly bull that would chase us if given a chance! It was always worth it to finally spend the afternoon playing in the creek. We would try to catch minnows, sling mud at each other, play chase and simply enjoy the water. Never worried about snakes, but I can guarantee you they were around! After a afternoon of fun you then had to face that pesky bull again! I laugh and laugh about that bull because as an adult we never have mean bulls at all. In my memories it seems like the little things made so much impact. Our dad would walk us to the little “camp house” by the creek and we would be allowed to pick a soft drink. I always got a strawberry soda! In the evenings we would play hide and seek and listen to the coyotes yell which usually ended up with us running inside for fear they would come eat us up! I really wouldn’t give up my time growing up on a ranch.

Here are a few “faces” from this week. Cowboy had camera in hand when driving around which is good because I have not had a camera in hand in over a month. Holding out for some pretty spring shots. Enjoy these cute faces today!

“Black Eye” is one of my favorites. You gotta love this face!

My favorite cow-NOT! (Remember: she does not like me. Only cow in herd I cannot turn my back on) However, I do love her “do”. She sure could use a bath! Very dirty girl.

Little ones are growing. Here are a few of the young ones. They are lucky and have had a very mild winter. Life is good!

Now that the holidays are over I am in an early spring cleaning mode. I do not think that there is one room, closet or drawer untouched and I must admit it is a pretty good feeling to know that everything inside is really clean and organized. That puts a smile on my face because when spring officially arrives I can direct my efforts outside. So much to do and never enough time, but I love working outside and relish the thought that in a couple of months I will be spending the majority of my time in the beautiful weather.

Our bathroom is sporting darling new hand towels which were a Christmas gift from lovely friends. They are adorable, aren’t they? They fit perfectly in our farmhouse. The farmhouse officially is all decked out for spring!

It is unusually warm today which is making me very ready for spring flowers. No wildflowers last spring which was so disappointing. I am so very hopeful that this spring we will have roadsides and fields full of pretty flowers. I am dreaming of yellows, oranges, reds, pinks, purples and whites. My camera will be ready and waiting…

We don’t have chickens so re-purposed this old vintage chicken feeder as a bird feeder. It works great for feeding the birds and adds lots of personality to our oak grove. What items do you re-purpose?

Soda da Cat

We have long time friends who are cat lovers like us. They have spent most of their lives loving and enjoying cats. They are now without any kitties, but a sweet neighborhood cat has adopted them and drops by to offer kitty loving every single day. My friends love receiving a daily kitty “fix”! This cat must be very exceptional because he knows our friends need his loving! Cats really are smart and know “these” things…

Friday Find

This is my fabulous Friday find. I have a sofa I really love and it is just a traditional sage colored sofa. It is very comfy and I love the color. Today I found two wonderful pillow covers to use with it. I will wait until March so I can officially put them out in honor of spring. Vivre is French for Live. The best thing about having a solid sofa is I can change the look by simply changing the pillows. Love the sage green in these with just a splash of red. These are from the spring line at Pottery Barn.

French Farm

This beautiful photo is from a friend of Cowboys. His family owns a pig farm in France and this photo speaks a thousand words on the bountiful loveliness of their country setting. I could plow in these French fields forever and a day on this beautiful farm. I have never had the opportunity to visit France, but am positive it is the French countryside I would want to explore! (Thanks to our French friend for sharing photo)

Sundance

November 2010 I posted about Sundance of the Desert, a rescue, who lives in New Mexico with one of my people friends. Sundance is such a special dog and very much loved.

Sundance very much enjoyed his fall leaves last month! Isn’t he adorable?

Sundance woke up wondering where did all his leaves go?? Does this dog have personality or what? My thoughts are that this rescue is so very happy to have a loving home that he is going to enjoy every single moment of life with “his people”. I can assure you that Sundance has made a huge impact on the lives of his people and doesn’t it make your heart happy to know this rescue is happy, loved and safe? Makes my heart happy.

Girl Scout Cookie Lip Smackers. How cool is that?? I love Lip Smackers and am on the hunt for these. Keeping fingers crossed I can find them this week. I have been using Lip Smackers for years and excited to locate these cookie flavors! Doesn’t take much to make me happy!
